Tycho is swinging through the east coast portion of Little Dragon's tour. I am excited about seeing Little Dragon, but to be honest, I am going to the show to see Tycho. And to maybe score some t-shirts and vinyl! Tycho is touring with a full band, although I am not sure what that will mean. If you like, you can stop by the Tycho music site and look (and purchase) his great music, art and t-shirts. He also posts ridiculously great play lists every month for your enjoyment. Also his new album Dive is out in mp3 and CD format. yes, I will be buying the vinyl, and maybe the "deluxe version", cause well, I am a dork...

Here is the new song/video for the new Marina And The Diamonds song titled Electra Heart part 1: Fear And Loathing (mouthful ain't it).

I don't think that there is a rivalry between Marina and Florence & The Machine, but in my head there is. I listen to both powerhouses, but I am way more partial to Marina. Besides possessing a great voice, I like her lyrics better-they are more clever/insightful/interesting/funny in my opinion. And yes, Marina and the Diamonds, I suppose, are poppier for the most part.

While I enjoy Florence & The Machine, their songs tend to be on the grandiose side, every song seems to swell with anthemic music made for stadiums. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it just seems like there are no real quiet moments. Sometimes the quiet make the loud seem that much more powerful. Maybe they just take themselves too seriously, like Radiohead.

And don't get me wrong, Marina And The Diamonds certainly have their moments of bombast. I guess for me, I have listened to Family Jewels album about 10 times more than the Lungs album. This does not make it better, it just makes it my preference...

New Ladytron Song and video!

This is turning into a great week, as I found new songs/videos for Ladytron and Marina & The Diamonds (which I will post in a second).

The Ladytron song is titled White Elephant off of their forthcoming (I hope soon) album called Gravity, The Seducer.

To me, or to my ears, this is not so much of a departure from the Ladytron sound, but an evolution. Let's face it, they spearheaded the Neu Wave sound 10+ years ago, and frankly did it better than most. What has been constant in their approach is the ability to craft great songs, so the evolution does not hinder them.

Gravity The Seducer drops in the US on September 13th. Visit with Ladytron here! And for now, please to enjoy the viddy...

The Labrador Label really loves you!

The charming Swedish label Labrador has a new summer 2011 compilation, and they want you to have it for free! The compilation is called Stockholm Believes In Us and can be listened to as individual songs here, or downloaded as a zip(py) file here. This compilation should give you a pretty fair idea about the Labrador label, and some of the great bands the support. Either way, it is a lovely summer affair!

Now here is what should happen, you listen and fall in love multiple times, and then return to Labrador and purchase some of these groups' music or merchandise. I believe it may also be available on Amazon (US only) here...

Pallers is kind of a sneaky group, they make beautifully infectious music that kind of worms its way into your head. So, with the release of episode 41 of the Circular Music podcast, I wanted to tell everyone that we crossed 80,000 downloads worldwide! Now that is not really a lot in terms of the real world podcasts whatever that means, but for a person (me) who just wanted to share music with his friends, I will D. Trump myself and say well done self!

For those of us that are challenged with the maths (like me), that is roughly 2,000 discerning people who download and listen to each episode of the podcast. Give or take...And I hope this helps(ed) give exposure to some 400+ music groups over those episodes! And really, there is so much great music out there that we will continue to discover together.

I suppose it was the same joy/relief we experienced when we saw Yelle perform live a few years ago. I would see her no matter what, but dang, she sounded great live! And had choreography to boot!!!

I went to see the Dum Dum Girls last night, thanks to my friend Melanie for hooking us up with tickets! The Dum Dum Girls (on Subpop) sounded great. There were definite influences like B-52s, Siouxie and The Banshees and maybe even The Long Blondes? I will say, they were influenced by bands, but they had their own thing going on. I see a lot of bands that just sound like someone, basically ripping them off whole cloth. Why yes, thanks for noticing, they are sassy!

I bought their new E.P. called He Gets Me High on vinyl (of course), which came with a download code (of course). I have to say, I may be liking the E.P. better than their album. The E.P. have more up front vocals, which may be from confidence or "better" production. The album had a Jesus & Cary Chain (or Pains Of Being Pure At Heart for the kids) fuzzed out sound to it. Either way, I like them, and you should too!

A band called Tennis opened up and I have to say, I may be smitten! Cute married couple (plus one) indie popped their way into my heart! I have to say, when I saw the flyers for Tennis, judging the band by it's album cover, I thought they were some sort of Neu Wavey, Electro-pop outfit! Not that there is anything wrong with that...They are on Fat Possum Records, which is home to a great number of good to great indie bands like The Walkmen, Wavves, Black Keys and Andrew Bird. And yes, I bought their album on vinyl as well...

Now here is where you come in. I like giving away the download codes for albums that I buy because I like to share the love. Let's play a game, shall we?

I was noddling around the interwebs today and noticed splashy banners for Ellie Goulding's new album called Lights. Which is weird because I (and alot of you astute listeners) bought the album last year. I played an Ellie Goulding song on episode 35 of Circular Music in April of last year! Listen to episode 35 of Circular Music, which is chock full of great songs!

I was listening to Lights this weekend, and was thinking to myself, man I wish she would come out with a new album! I find it odd that record labels still stagger releases in different countries. Pre-order it, or re-order it on iTunes or Amazon. Anyway, enjoy her again for the first time...

Yelle has a new song out called Safari Disco Club and I am still digesting it. It has a bit of vocoder, or auto tune as the kids call it, which you would think would be a good thing. I have a deep affection for Kraftwerk, ZAPP etc., but I thought Jay-Z declared the death of auto tune?

Having seen Yelle live, I can tell you it is not needed. So is it for irony, or boredom, or heck relevancy? Anywhosal, I hope this means we are getting close to a new proper album! According to Amazon, through the very excellent Fluxblog, the album comes out March 22nd.

Trish Keenan From Broadcast Died Yesterday...

Trish Keenan, who was the singer for the English band Broadcast, died on January 14th from pneumonia after being infected with swine flu on tour recently.

I came to them a bit late, I suppose stumbling onto their 2007 album Tender Buttons. Trish's voice set against the fragmented, art damaged pop was a thing of beauty to me. though they started out as more in the typically English trip-hop vein, which I am always a sucker for spy guitars, they grew into something much more. The understated, quiet of her voice was the perfect counterpoint to the music.

I count Broadcast and The Long Blondes as some of my favorite groups of the last decade. And like The Long Blondes, there is something so very British about them.

If you have not heard them, then please do so. If you have, then listen again and remember why they were special...

I can't imagine what the family and friends and group members are going through, and my heart goes out to them.

I mean really, where does the time go? It has been two years since Feed The Animals. This time around, I don't even see a link to throw him a few bucks, so enjoy his work guilt free. So yeah, I saw a trailer for a movie about the Facebooks guy (starring the poor man's Michael Cera), called The Social Network and it featured a song that was featured on episode 26 of Circular Music way back in 2008!

Yes I know the movie is out, but I just watched a live performance again, and I am still awestruck by these Belgian singers. I really like their song choices, and the way they retain the melodies but add so much nuance to each performance. I would like to believe that I somehow made this possible for them. But that would be delusional.

Ruminations on the latest video by Lady Gaga

So I have a few thoughts on this video. I am not really adding or subtracting anything from Lady Gaga, I am merely an observer...

First and foremost, for me, the most disturbing aspect is the Three Stooges bowl cut forced on all the male dancers. The heels, fishnets etc pale in comparison! The dancers probably would not squirm as much, or tried to escape without the dumb and dumberer supercut. Come to think of it, knowing Gaga's penchant for product placement, perhaps this is an embedded ad for Supercuts? And I have to give an eh? to the blonde Dorothy Hamill do worn by Ms. Gaga.

Also, is this a cover of Madonna's La Isla Bonita? Which may be a cover of Abba's Fernando?

I apologize to all Catholics, but the use of Catholic iconography, even in the form of latex nun habits is a bit tired, and not the least bit effective at "shock". I know, I know, being offended is a full time job to some, but really, someone's religion should be able to withstand a bit more than this...

I also enjoy the idea that a former christian singer by the name of Katy Perry deems this blasphemous! It is certainly ok to kiss a girl, shoot whipped cream outcha bra and have a song called Ur So Gay, but heaven forbid that Lady Gaga, blasphemer! Ms Kettle, please hold for Ms. Black...

I am certain that I have missed a few things, like the bigger message about fascism, the need for sustainable beds? Having said all this, I can not wait to see her at Lollapalooza this year!

Ok, so here is a breakdown of product placements in Lady Gaga's new video. Oh you have not seen it? Well it is below.

I have a few thoughts on first inspection;

Beyonce bleeping motherf&*ker (was that enough to disguise the word?) is funny to me because she said the word, but she is all christian, so you can't "hear" her say that!

This video may be Lady Gaga's November Rain! Now before everyone gets excited/offended/both about the comparison to Guns+Roses epic video, let me explain. To me, even though I was never a huge G+R fan, I thought November Rain was the beginning of the end for them. And it turned out that I was correct (it happens). The song was uber indulgent and bloated enough on its own and the video made it worse, or really more apparent that G+R had become just another RAWK Inc band.

So Lady Gaga's video has, as always, great visuals (costumes, props etc) and the song is what it is, a pop song. I don't begrudge Lady Gaga for that. I think, at least for a mainstream artist, she is always interesting. Kind of like early Marilyn Manson, when he was hungry (as opposed to now MM after he has eaten, alot). She is sassy, and is just over the top enough to be interesting. And I thank her for that!

And I won't spend time attempting to delve in to the artistic merit of Ms Gaga, so we will leave it at that. I don't see a future in dissecting the meaning of her lyrics. We can probably guess by some of her head pieces in the video that she either wants someone to call her, or she missed a call, or perhaps she has spotty coverage, ahem.

Fairly weathered bench, huh? This bench is the bench where I sweated, stammered out the weakest, dryest proposal ever to my now wife Yana. I knew(?) what the answer would be, but I have never been so at a loss for words in my life. Hell, I even talk in my sleep!

Instead of the done to death helicopter/hot air balloon proposal that we are shown and have come to expect at this moment, I proposed to Yana on a bench, in a parking lot at Stardust Coffee...And she said yes, I think (I went deaf and mute)... We met there, first dated there, got to know each other there. It is the cultural hub of Orlando, such as it is.

When Brett, the owner, heard that it was "our" bench, he gave it to us! Well, that and he wanted to replace all the broke ass benches out front...So we hauled it home as a reminder of one of the most important days to us...This "holiday" is made up! You can not show your love for your respective mate with a commercially available product...Right?

Crap! Is there such a thing as a one hour florist?
